Superintendent turnover has received a well-deserved increase in attention from researchers. In particular, Dr. Rachel S. White’s The Superintendent Lab” (see https://thesuperintendentlab.com/) has increased the attention to all issues related to superintendents.
In this brief, my research assistant Xinran Zhang and I examine superintendent turnover in Pennsylvania from 2014 to 2023. We find that superintendent turnover was at its highest point ever in 2023 and the change from 2022 to 2023 was the largest increase in superintendent turnover on record.
Ms. Zhang is a recent graduate from Penn State’s Education Policy and Politics (EPP) Program. I will be working with her and other EPP students on policy briefs in the coming year.
